The Solar Decathlon competition, held every two years, attempts to pit the engineering departments of different universities in a bid to produce the most-efficient and elegant solar-powered home. This year, the winner is the Technische Universität Darmstadt from Germany. One ingenious feature is the placement of small solar cells on shutters - thereby boosting the output of energy. Another ingenious feature is the beds and sofas can be covered over by the floor - thereby reducing the total surface and consequently energy needs.
